Halifax Bank is one of the best known retail banking brands in the UK. And one of the most recognised brands within the financial services industry.
The origins of the Halifax.
It was originally created in the Industrial Revolution, in the town of Halifax, thats where the textile industry was a huge player. With the local population doubling through an influx of textile factory workers. New ‘permanent’ societies were created that effectively provided early banking services. In 1853 this became the formal bank and the first mortgage was granted that year, to one of the founding fathers who borrowed £121 to buy land which is now part of the head office site!
The Halifax grows rapidly.
Business was strong from the word go, as the first customers got to grips with savings, loans and investments. With mortgages being a key aspect of the bank from the start. A huge leap in the Halifax’s development came in the so-called Enoch era, when Enoch Hill became secretary in 1903 and progressed to Managing Director. He led the bank through a huge expansion, which played a vital role in mortgage lending for a large national home building programme. Further offices were opened around the UK, and the Halifax Permanent merged with the Halifax Equitable Benefit Building Society in 1928, creating an institution five times the size of its nearest competitor.
A rapidly changing world.
By the 1960s, banking was changing rapidly to the modern system we know today. The 1990s saw a busy period of mergers and acquisitions, including Leeds Building Society. In 1997 the bank switched to PLC status. And then was eventually acquired by Lloyds TSB in 2009, following the global banking crisis of 2008 onwards. Lloyds Banking Group is now the biggest in the UK.
Today Halifax is a thriving retail banking brand with a strong high street presence. It offers the full mix of retail banking services, including savings, current accounts, insurance, a share dealing service and investments, personal loans, mortgages and plenty more. Halifax’s rates often top the best buy tables and its service is rated well by customers.
